Summary England, 1770: the cottagers in the village of Wollaston are suffering great hardship from the enclosures of common land by the wealthy de Boville family. So Zack Venn, dispossessed and embittered, heads for London taking his daughter Meg, who must part from her childhood friend, Elizabeth Pond, the parson's daughter. Elizabeth is heartbroken when Richard de Boville is sent away by his parents, unknowingly leaving her pregnant. Meanwhile life in London is hard for Meg, but through all the changes and chances of their lives, the separate pathways of the two girls are destined to merge again.
