Summary
Ann Prentice is a quiet woman, a widow devoted to Sarah, her only child. She likes the simple things in life - soft firelight and evenings at home. After nineteen-year-old Sarah goes off to Switzerland with her friends for three weeks, Ann attends a dinner party with an old friend. There she meets Richard Cauldfield, also widowed. As the two fall in love, she hopes for new happiness. But Sarah cannot contemplate the idea of her mother marrying him. Resentment and jealousy corrode their relationship, and it seems that mother and daughter are destined to be enemies for life...
